Former Safeway on Hayden Island being demolished; flooring store to be built

The Hayden Island Safeway that closed in 2018 is being demolished to make way for a flooring store called Floor & Decor.

Demolition at the site – 11919 N. Jantzen Drive in Portland – is visible to commuters on Interstate 5.

The new building will be an 80,000-square-foot, single-story retail building with surface-lot parking, according to documents submitted to Multnomah County. The permit for the building is still under review; it’s unclear when construction will start.

Floor & Decor is a Georgia-based chain that sells hard surface flooring and related accessories. The company is publicly owned and trades under the symbol FND. It has locations across the country, including in Tukwila and Everett, though this will be the chain’s first Oregon store.

Multnomah County records show that Safeway Inc. still owns the property. Representatives from the grocery chain did not immediately return phone calls from The Columbian for more information. It’s not clear why the Safeway building is being demolished instead of remodeled.

The Safeway opened in 1989 and closed in 2018 because it was underperforming, according to a 2018 article in The Oregonian/OregonLive.

The Zupan’s Market across the street closed in 2006 after construction issues led to the building buckling.

Residents of Hayden Island are without a full grocery store, though the Target on the other side of the freeway at Jantzen Beach sells groceries.
